It's a fairly recently developed method for developing approximate solutions for the differential equations usually seen in the modeling of many different physical systems. The exact solutions of these problems are usually difficult or impossible to solve for directly (even using computers!) so the problem is broken up into many smaller, simpler pieces.

So like when Britain decided to split up the continent of Africa into 'nations' and just deal with them 1 by 1. And I don't like the term 'approximate solutions' because that doesn't make sense. I would hate that class, but good luck. You sound legit. 10/10 would pay to do my homework.
